WHO WE ARE

MICK EMMINGS
DIRECTOR (PRE-PRESS)

Mick’s expertise is reprographics and he is closely involved in every job. It is largely thanks to his eagle eyed attention to detail and unrelenting scrutiny that nothing makes it onto the press without first getting past his rigorous quality checks.

His career began in 1978 when he left school to work for a small reprographic company, completing a four year apprenticeship in 4 colour planning. From there he went on to run a repro department and has continued to be involved in overseeing and managing pre-press departments at a variety of companies, as the industry evolved from manual bench work, to the use of Macs and IT.

Mick joined DB Print in 2008 and clients continue to benefit hugely from his valuable knowledge, meticulous methods and constructive advice.

JON HEARD
DIRECTOR (PRINT PRODUCTION)

Jon joined DB Print in 2007 and is responsible for the make ready, proofing and production of our print. He operates and maintains the presses, monitoring all the critical and highly variable elements that effect print such as temperature, humidity, ink composition and saturation.

Thanks to Jon’s close attention and continual adjustments, our quality and results are consistent throughout – from the first copy to the last.

Jon started his lengthy career in the industry in 1980, completing a four year apprenticeship in Print. In 1985 he joined The White Dove Press where for 19 years he honed his skills working at the very top end of the print spectrum, producing premium quality, limited edition items for blue chip organisations and high profile clients. These included exquisite limited edition books and prints, some of which were presented to the Queen.

Jon then became the Director of his own commercial printing company which ran for 11 years, before winding this up and eventually bringing his exceptional production expertise to DB.

MICK SMITH
SALES & MARKETING MANAGER

Mick joined DB Print in 2016 bringing with him a wealth of industry experience spanning three decades. He carefully manages the day-to-day flow of print production and purchasing, monitoring schedules and specifications to ensure our high quality standards are maintained.

Mick learned his trade over a six year apprenticeship as a lithographic plate maker and wet proofer, before moving on to manage a team of five. He subsequently set up an in-house proofing department at one of Europe’s biggest repro houses, where he was instrumental in establishing high colour management and densitometry standards.

During his long career Mick has held many client facing roles as well as running his own trade proofing and print business, so is well versed in translating customer requirements into beautifully produced end products.

MARTYN BARNARD
SENIOR PRINTER

After gaining a City and Guilds printing qualification at college, Martyn began work as a trainee machine minder in 1996, subsequently completing an NVQ Level 2 in Printing. Over the last two decades he has been responsible for minding print on both sheet-fed litho and web presses, producing a range of trade promotional and commercial items.

As a former Director of a printing company and a qualified internal quality auditor, Martyn is familiar with the broader production context and knows how to deliver the exceptional standards that DB are known for.

He monitors and controls the intricacies of the print process throughout, delivering strict standards of colour consistency, saturation and fit. As a result of his close scrutiny and expertise, we guarantee superior results from the first to the last, no matter the size or quantity of the print run.

STEVE MILLER
FINISHING MANAGER

Steve began his career in print as soon as he left school, completing an apprenticeship in Print Finishing. 35 years later and there is nothing he doesn’t know about achieving a client brief using a range of cutting, creasing, folding, stitching and gluing techniques.

Steve joined DB Print in 2017 to manage our in-house finishing department, bringing an abundance of skills gained from 27 years running his own finishing business. He collaborates closely with the pre-press and print teams, ensuring that work is laid out to optimise efficient finishing processes, as well as helping to reverse engineer some of the more complex print items in order to achieve the desired results.

Steve is responsible for managing our finishing team, making certain that quality remains consistently high, deadlines are hit and items are carefully packaged according to batch requirements.

REPRO

Inconsistencies often occur when one organisation works with multiple designers. RGB versus CMYK, specials, image resolution, formatting – these can all affect the end result. DB Print are that one constant, safeguarding the quality of the brand by checking that artwork files feature appropriate logos, colours and fonts throughout. Plus, we always run a high res proof as part of our quality control process, no matter how small the job may be.

PRINT

We print everything from, brochures, leaflets, posters, point of sale items and direct mail, to folders and 3D engineered items. Our five colour press enables us to economically run a litho seal machine varnish. This adds durability to items with heavy ink coverage, allowing them to be handled quicker, while protecting them from marking.

FINISHING
–

Our in-house team offer the full range of services and will saddle stitch, bind, die-cut, fold, crease and glue your job as required, hand-finishing things like capacity folders and 3D items. Spot UVs, lamination, foiling, laser cutting and more, can all be used to give your items the wow factor.
